Moira not only has had herself disenfranchised, but her wife as well, so she's simultaneously thinking about taking care of herself and her spouse, and worrying if their next of kin will "take care" of them. On Sci-Hub, the search by DOI/PMID works much better, but many DOI/PMID are simply wrong. All DOIs starts by 10. (not http). Search the exact title on Crossref (search metadata) and Pubmed and use those correct DOI/PMID in Sci-Hub (sometimes you get both a DOI and a PMID and only one works). If you mean an ideological tract in which all women are angels and/or so victimized they are incapable of moral choice, no. If you mean a novel in which women are human beings — with all the variety of character and behavior that implies — and are also interesting and important, and what happens to them is crucial to the theme, structure and plot of the book, then yes. In that sense, many books are “feminist.” • Britannica Explains In these videos, Britannica explains a variety of topics and answers frequently asked questions. • save Related Subreddits • ^ Bohannon, John; Elbakyan, Alexandra (28 April 2016). That isn't how The Handmaid's Tale is written, though. The explanations for the sudden changes are fantastical, at best, dependent on evil, digitized money—be careful with the mobile payments and bitcoins, ladies!—and misogynistic, conservative conspiracies that readers are to believe could bring millions of people to a stupefied halt and change culture in the blink of an eye. Eleanor does some quick thinking with the man manning the grounds: “I’m Commander Lawrence’s wife,” she says, before saying she’d been promised a tour. They let her in — but not June. As June skirts the perimeter, hearing Hannah’s voice and crying tears of joy, she’s suddenly pulled back toward the entrance — where Eleanor is, again. This time she’s flustered, evidently unwell. June asks if she wants to be taken home. Eleanor says yes. Back at home, Joseph gives June a stern look — as, finally, we come to understand the Lawrence spouses’ dynamic a little bit better. visual effects Nan A. For inclusion in this analysis, each required an ISSN and at least one article as part of the Crossref-derived catalog of scholarly literature. Accordingly, our catalog consisted of 23,037 journals encompassing 56,755,671 articles. Of these journals, 4,598 (20.0%) were inactive (i.e. no longer publishing articles), and 2,933 were open access (12.7%). Only 70 journals were inactive and also open access. • embed • parent YES. Interspersed with her narratives of her present-day experiences are flashbacks of her life before and during the beginning of the revolution, when she finds she has lost all autonomy to her husband, their failed attempt to escape to Canada, her indoctrination into life as a Handmaid by the government-trained Aunts, and the successful escape of her friend Moira. At her new home, she is treated poorly by a woman called Serena Joy, the Commander's wife and a former Christian media personality, who supported women's domesticity and subordinate role well before Gilead was established. To Offred's surprise, the Commander requests to see her outside of the "Ceremony", a sexual ritual obligatory for handmaids and intended to result in conception in the presence of his wife. The two begin an illegal relationship where they play Scrabble and Offred is allowed to ask favours of him, whether in terms of information or material items. Finally, he gives her lingerie and takes her to a government-run brothel called Jezebel's meant to add variety to men's sex lives, which (as claimed by the Commander) is necessary. Offred unexpectedly encounters Moira there, with her will broken, and she learns that those who are found breaking the law are sent to the Colonies to clean up toxic waste or are allowed to work at Jezebel's as punishment. As this country continues to slide down a slippery slope into chaos, watching The Handmaid’s Tale has become masochistic as the main character, Offred/June, and other women are raped, abused and heavily oppressed by the fictional government of Gilead. Her motivation for writing the novel was her belief that in the 1980s, the religious right was discussing what they would do with/to women if they took power, including the Moral Majority, Focus on the Family, the Christian Coalition and the Ronald Reagan administration. [8] Further, Atwood questions what would happen if these trends, and especially "casually held attitudes about women" were taken to their logical end. [9] Atwood continues to argue that all of the scenarios offered in The Handmaid's Tale have actually occurred in real life—in an interview she gave regarding Oryx and Crake, Atwood maintains that "As with The Handmaid's Tale, I didn't put in anything that we haven't already done, we're not already doing, we're seriously trying to do, coupled with trends that are already in progress... So all of those things are real, and therefore the amount of pure invention is close to nil." [10] Atwood was also known to carry around newspaper clippings to her various interviews to support her fiction's basis in reality. [11] Atwood has explained that The Handmaid's Tale is a response to those who claim the oppressive, totalitarian, and religious governments that have taken hold in other countries throughout the years "can't happen here"—but in this work, she has tried to show how such a takeover might play out. However, the lyrics are completely apt: Emily cannot keep walking on broken glass. She needs rescuing, pulling from the wreckage of her own self-destruction, and it seems that Commander Lawrence fully intends on doing just that. But he is not providing Emily with salvation: she, too, is doing the same for him. After all, it is he who birthed Gilead.
